Become your biggest fan, not your biggest critic to lose weight

What you think about, comes about. If you are always criticizing your body, or your difficulty following through with a healthy lifestyle, then that will ultimately become your reality.

So stop talking badly about yourself and make changes! Whenever my clients say anything negative about themselves I will make them do burpess or whatever exercise they hate the most. My goal is to reprogram their thinking, not punish them, to make them realize what and how frequently they are indulging in negative self-talk.

When I meet someone who says “I’m a fat mess,” not only do I feel awkward in that moment for that person, that person doesn’t realize they are programing their brain and body to be “a fat mess.” Sadly, the chances of change happening with that mindset will probably be slim to none. So, how do we reprogram ourselves? Here a few tips to help you become your biggest fan and not your biggest critic.

1. Recognize the countless skills, talents, and characteristics to love about yourself – If you don’t love yourself, who else will? Focus on what’s great about you and how you can translate those qualities into other areas of your life.

2. Acknowledge all the countless accomplishments you achieved once you put your mind to it – If you have a college degree or a HS Diploma or have taken a specialty course, those took time but once you committed, you saw it through to the end.

3. Look at how long you have been gaining the weight you are unhappy with and be realistic about the amount of time it will take to lose it. – Unfortunately most people give up on their
goals of being healthier and fit because it doesn’t happen quickly enough. We are in a world of instant gratification and lasting weight loss WILL NOT happen overnight. Even if you have surgery (Instant Gratification) chances are if you don’t change your lifestyle you will gain the weight back and then some. This is a lifelong journey, not a sprint.

4. Every time you say something negative about yourself or your body image do or say something crazy to counter it. – My Dad says “Cancel/Clear” and rephrases whatever he says if he realizes he said something he didn’t like or that didn’t reflect his higher self. It sounds crazy but if you hear yourself saying “Cancel/Clear” all day then there is a problem…you are criticizing yourself too much. He would say cancel/clear to reprogram his brain to cancel whatever he was saying and clear it from his mind. You can create your own negative thinking interruptions such as clapping your hands, snapping your fingers, or saying “I’m great,” but clear the negative conversation from your head and reprogram your mind for positive thoughts. Positive thoughts
will bring positive results.

5. Wear clothes that make you feel good and look good – If you are having self-image issues, why are you squeezing into skinny jeans or workout attire that doesn’t fit you? Often that is a form of self-punishment. Wear clothes that make you feel good and confident about yourself, no matter what your size. There are plenty of options out there, even if you are no longer the size you want to be. Stop trying to wear the same clothes you wore when you were smaller and embrace who you are now. Accept and love yourself right now! Then set realistic goals to get back to that smaller size (if that’s what you want), and love yourself through the whole process.

6. Lastly, pray and/or meditate – It doesn’t matter what your religious beliefs, we all need to slow down and take 15 minutes for ourselves. Visualize what you want your day to look like, and pray for clarity and guidance. Have quiet time thinking about loving yourself and how you can accomplish your goals. Imagine and feel your highest, most realized self in every detail and it will surely manifest.

Learn to be your biggest fan and the rest will take care of itself!
